The fade of Joanna Gruesome from the spotlight of the UK’s DIY scene was something I found pretty saddening. Despite bringing in various new members to lead the line and an impressive final single in the form of 'Pretty Fucking Sick (of it All)', the band never seemed to recover from the loss of Alanna McArdle and eventually parted company.

Now they’re back! Well, not quite. Ex-Vöid is the new band from Alanna and Jo Grue bandmate Owen Williams, as well as Laurie Foster, Kester Davies and Jon Coddington. It sees the pair’s unique vocal partnership reunited on their self-titled debut EP. Lead by single 'Boyfriend', the collection of power-pop masterpieces are full to the brim with fuzzy melodies reminiscent of fellow DIY icon Trust Fund. It’s a clever mix of tracks: 'Boyfriend' sounds enough like their former band to immediately win me over, while '(Angry At You) Baby' shows a real development in style. Alanna’s vocals are soft, gently echoed by Owen, the gnarl of guitar is all that prevents this being an all-out pop song. Ex-Vöid are supporting Waxahatchee on their UK tour in June, so it wont be long until their playful punk is under the spotlight once more.

Ex-Vöid is out now on Don Giovanni Records.
